The Character
Full Name: Basil Dixon.
Nicknames: Basil. (noway)
Age: Twenty-EIGHT.
Side: The good side. He is the (hopefully) Chief Inspector, otherwise known as Detective Chief Inspector. That would make him a sort of Police Force, only he likes to solve things instead of chasing down people with guns. Don’t get him wrong: if he has to chase someone down with a gun, he won’t hesitate. So long as he has conviction and reason.
What is he? Basil is a sort of Shadow Elemental. As a result of this, he can morph completely into a shadow, travel either as a person would, in three dimensions, or he could travel as a shadow would, in two dimensions. As the wispy shadow, his form would be more solid on a surface (wall, ground, etcetera), or it would be not solid at all, and upright on the ground.
He can also manipulate the shadows, and since a person’s shadow /is/ them, he can also use their shadows. People have been known to be walking along, when they have stopped dead in their tracks. This is because Basil can morph his foot into a two-dimensional shadow, and then step on theirs. If he does this, then they are frozen in their tracks, and will not be able to move, whatsoever.
As well as stopping a shadow, Basil can command the shadows to move on their own: So if someone runs away from him, he can get their shadow to grab their legs, and then they stop (mostly because they trip, and then fall). But, this power taxes his energy, and as a result, he doesn’t use it often.
Appearance: Contrary to the popular style worn by many adolescents, Basil’s hair is short. It is not an army cut; much too long for that. But his hair is just long enough that it appears to always be in a state of controlled frenzy. It sticks out a bit from his head, and is the same inky black colour as the shadows that he can control. His eyes are a light shade of grey, and his skin of the slightly more pale variety. He spends much of his time inside, although he can be persuaded to emerge into the sunlight.
Now, his appearance contrasting greatly with his parents’ was always a mystery, until the emergence of his powers. His mother, see, had light blonde hair, and blue eyes, and his father had fiery red hair, and green eyes. It was always quite confusing. But when Basil began to play with shadows, the truth was revealed.
Now, he cloaks himself in materials he thinks resemble shadows: a flowing black trench coat that flows down his body and mimics his shadowy cousins. Most often, his pants are black, and his shirt is a black tee-shirt. He does not wear a traditional detective hat and so many mistake him for some sort of g*th. It is the way that he moves, with lithe graceful strides, which make some think differently.
He is quite lean, but seems to fit his body: for all of his five feet and ten inches, he moves with the grace expected of a ballet dancer.
And his preferred shoes are black Converse high-tops. Strange, yet they seem to fit his slight eccentricity.
Character Play by: None yet.
Personality: Many mistake Basil for arrogant. Well, in a sort of way, he is. But not in that one would expect. For all that he looks down upon people, he is just as good as he says, and compared to him, they are just as bad. He is brutally honest with things like this, and many do not talk to him because of it. If, per say, a woman were to ask him if she looked fat in her newest dress, and she did, then he would say so.
As a result, he has very few friends, save those whom he chose as his direct subordinates. These are the select few deemed competent enough to work directly under him, and he chooses these with the best of care.
Basil is also rather brilliant, and can thus be slightly detached from mundane things. Sometimes, when people ask him a question, if he is thinking of something else at the moment, then he will not answer, and they will have to repeat it.
He is also rather calculating (thanks to his mathematical studies), and will often add up the components in a case, if they do not seem to work for him. Much like a mathematical problem, he will add up the victims, places of death, reason of death, and suspects, and will often come up with the murderer. Since he can do this quite easily, he handles the more difficult murder cases that come into his Agency.
He does not work under people, and as such gets into disputes with the Head of the Police. Rather, the Head of the Police gets into disputes with Basil: Basil does not deem the Chief to be quite intelligent enough, so he simply ignores him. Of course, if Basil has a question, then he will ask it, but if the question does not seem to require an answer (or, at least, if Basil does not think it does), then he will not answer it.
Likes:
Cats: especially Bengal cats. They’re his absolute favorite. (And especially Benjamin)
Rain: Because it is always dark when it rains, and darkness means more shadows. He is comfortable in the dark. And the rain is soothing to him.
His office: It is very dark and calm in there, and only his direct subordinates are allowed in, so it is free of incompetence.
Trees: On his breaks, he can often be found in the shade of a tree, or hiding up in one, or hanging from his knees in one. When he does hang upside down from his knees, he often falls asleep, and his cat, Ben, will perch on his knees.
Puzzles: Basil is surprisingly good at puzzles, and can put them together in very little time. His best time was with a 1000 piece puzzle, which he finished in 30 minutes.
This says quite a bit about his skills as a detective.
Maps: He loves to plot courses, and note the connections between routes, and also between criminal activities in his city.
Snakes: The masters of silent movement, he adores snakes and keeps one in his office, actually. The only light of the room comes from the snake’s tank, which isn’t bright, but is always light, as the animal is cold-blooded and always needs a heat source.
Shadows: You never would have guessed.
Popsicles: He has a slight obsession with popsicles. As a shadow elemental, it is easier for him to morph into a shadow if his internal body temperature is colder than the norm, so he nearly constantly eats popsicles. And he saves the sticks (after bleaching them), because one of his life's goals is to build all of his furniture out of popsicle sticks. Already, he collected enough to start on a chair, which he has at his home. It isn't finished, but it is getting there.
Dislikes:
Dogs: Because he feels they are disgusting. And dogs do not work well with cats, so it is quite the fair trade-off.
Morons: People who should obviously not have graduated from Justice School. If these people talk to him, then he just ignores them. It’s as simple as that. After all, he /is/ the Chief Inspector. He doesn’t need to deal with them. But then again, when he has to pick through resumes, he doesn’t bother to read them. Subordinates pick out the idiots, and then they send them through. If Basil decides he doesn’t like them, or that they’re stupid, then they don’t work there. If he decides that he doesn’t care, then they work in the lower levels. If he decides that he likes them, then they work with him. But very few work directly with him, because he has very high standards. And hates idiots.
Pizza: Yes. Basil has some problems. But that is alright.
Meat: He doesn’t particularly like it, but if it is in a dish that his sister has created, he will eat it. Otherwise, he is basically a vegetarian: since he is so well connected to most animals, aside from dogs.
Strengths:
Solving crimes: He can solve them like he solves puzzles, although crimes are far more difficult, as puzzle pieces do not make choices, and human beings do.
Being Honest: It is much easier for him to be honest, than for him to lie, although if a situation calls for a lie,

Weaknesses:
Sage, thyme, dust: He is allergic.
Chopsticks (he can’t use them).
Sleep (if he doesn’t get enough, it’s tough to solve crimes, but sometimes he doesn’t sleep, and he does fine. So, it’s fifty-fifty).
Sand (gets in his toes).
Fears:
Dying before a crime is solved.
Dying (in general).
The ocean (drowning).
Freezing to death.
Idiots (he loses his temper around them, and losing temper might equal losing job).
Losing his job.
Family Tree:
Paula Dixon; Mother Alive: 50 years old. She works as a journalist of the small town in Pennsylvania where she and Neal live, and has been writing in newspapers since she was twelve. Her favorite book is Old Yeller, and her favorite newspaper is the New York Times.
Neal Dixon; Father Alive: 53 years old. He is the head of the chain of banks in the town of Pennsylvania where he and Paula live, and has continued on with the family business since his father died of a heart attack at the age of 92. His favorite colour is green, and his absolute favorite business suit is black slacks with a white jacket.
Danielle Dixon; Sister. Alive: four years younger than Basil. She works in the food industry, as a professional chef, and owns her very own chain of restaurants, called "Verius". Her favorite food is spaghetti (made in Italian restaurants), and her favorite dessert is crème brulée.
History: Basil grew up in a rather nice suburb of New York City proper. The grass (where happened to be some) was green, yards were kept clean, and trees flowered abundantly year after year. Well, at least, that was where Basil grew up for the first seven years of his life. When his youngest sister, Danielle, turned three, his parents became bored with the mundane neighbourhood, and decided to spice up their lives.
And so, the Dixon family moved to Russia. It was a rather abrupt change, but they coped, and Basil became quite fluent in Russian. He was always rather quick to pick up on things, and so at the age of ten, he was hanging out with the locals as casually as they hung out with one another (meaning to say, his Russian was sufficient enough that he knew /all/ of the words: even the ones that weren’t PG-13). This was the year that his mother, ever the adventurous journalist, decided that it was once again time for a change. Three years was far too long to spend in one place, after all.
And this was also the year that Basil discovered that he was as normal as his parents, and much more abnormal than the children around him. His mother, you see, was a telekinetic. She could levitate objects with her mind; and often wrote without using her hands. It was quite a useful skill, but Basil was always quite sad that he hadn’t inherited it. Not to say that he hadn’t tried: he had been caught many a time trying to levitate an object from a short distance. Range hadn’t mattered; he couldn’t do it.
But ever since he had been three, he’d known somewhat that he did have powers. But, as his father explained to him, powers didn’t always manifest themselves in normal ways. He spoke from experience, as he was a fire elemental. His powers hadn’t shown themselves physically until he was fifteen.
Since Basil learned much quicker than any normal child, he finally fully understood his powers at the age of ten. He could manipulate the shadows.
He practiced with his powers when he was not around other children, and even as his family moved from country to country, he never stopped learning. He was quite the gifted child: After two months, he was able to completely understand the language of the people around him. So they moved frequently, and over the course of the next five years, he learned French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Polish. For two years, the Dixon family settled down in Australia, where Basil (who had graduated from secondary school at the age of fifteen) studied at the School of Mathematics and Statistics. He obtained a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences, in that time, and his mother (who had grown itchy of this country) decided that the Dixon family was going to move, yet again.
So they moved to the United States of America, where Basil had already decided that he was going to go into Criminal Justice. He had a sort of feeling that his knowledge of statistics and general knowledge (he was absolutely brilliant, and in ways that others simply couldn’t understand: some of them hated him for it) would come in handy.
The family settled down in Florida, where Dixon attended the Florida Metropolitan University in Orange Park.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice after two years (yet again, he is an exceptionally fast learner), and obtained an Associate of Science in Criminal Investigations.
At twenty years, he moved out on his own, and at twenty two had a Master of Science in Criminal Justice under his belt, as well as one and a half years of investigative experience. He moved to New York City with his sister, where he spent one year amassing more experience in the field of investigative experience while she (who had struggled through most of school except cooking), studied to be a chef. That school she whizzed through, and as Basil prepared to move away, Danielle prepared to make the next move in her career. She was going to become a professional chef, but Basil wasn’t about to stick around. Instead, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked for two years under a brilliant detective. The detective knew that Basil was brilliant as well, and when he died (at the age of 89), he named Basil as his heir, since he had none.
And then, he moved to Shawl.
His reputation had already preceded him, and the police force in Shawl was clamoring for him to come. As were their detectives. He did, in fact, move there (he had enough money for quite some time, but he was not about to give up the thing that he loved most), and they offered him quite a high pay. Well, high pay for a detective at least.
Very quickly, he chose his direct subordinates, and then secluded himself to the most difficult of criminal investigations: The mobs and gangs. And the occasional interesting case that he decided to take.
Other: Not very many people can tolerate Basil Dixon, since he is so brutally honest. But the few that do find him to be a wonderful companion. And he can lie; he just chooses not to. After all, shadows don’t lie. So why should he?
Basil also has a cat, named Benjamin. He is a male Bengal cat, and has the uncanny ability to glow. He can glow the brightest white, and for just long enough for Basil to capture a shadow or two. But glowing uses up his little kitty energy, so he can only do it for a few seconds. (http://www.tejascats.com/Loner3.jpg)
Benjamin is never away from Basil, and even sits on the man’s shoulder, looking for all the world as if he owns it.
