Q: Where is the plot?
A: It's here. It's served to you in IC, easily-digestible bites.
Q: What is this city called?
A: Shawl. Now when you look at the title of the board, you see a double meaning, no?
Q: How big is Shawl?
A: Shawl is about as big as Los Angeles, and in fact, is set (fictionally) only a short drive away.
Q: What are the rankings for the detective agency? The boss looks strange and unfamiliar to my brain so I don't know what I should be expecting.
A: Basil says that it goes like so:
Stupid = Gordy
Slightly moronic = Main Level People
Barely competent = The Custodian
Competent = Upper Floors
Basil's personal subordinates = Seraphim
BASIL = God!
Q: How many characters can I have?
A: At the moment, you can only have three characters because there aren't enough people to interact with. You don't want your characters to be sitting about all lonely-like, now, do you?
Q: Can I kill off a character?
A: Depends. Is it yours? If so, then yes. If it is not yours, then I would strongly suggest you taking a leaf out of the rule book and don't godmode.
Q: Can I be an admin?
A: Maybe. Just contact Tali or Ali over a PM and they'll get you to fill out an admin form. It isn't hard, you know.
Q: How many mobs/gangs are there?
A: At the moment, one. We do, however, have room for several more. Please join as bad guys, so that those on the right side of the law have someone to fight against.
Q: Do we accept all sorts of sexual orientations?
A: Of course.
Q: May I name my own gang?
A: If you're going to have a gang, then yes, you may. In fact, please do because Ali and Tali aren't in the mood to indulge your lack of creativity.
Q: What can my character be? What sorts of powers can he have?
A: Shawl is geared more toward grunge fantasy than anything else, but even the admins have trouble coming up with a genre ("true crime grunge fantasy with a small side of your mother" just wasn't quite right). We like creativity, but we also like the credible. We like interesting new spins on old myths or fantasy creatures. We'll take anything so long as it's good.
Q: What do you mean how will my character fit in?
A: Basically, we are just asking for your character's occupation. If he is unemployed or works in a field that may not initially seem to connect to the law enforcement theme, you have this chance to explain how he fits into the milieu. (updated 9/29/08 because it was still not clear)
Q: May I create a character who is the under-eighteen child of one of my present characters?
A: Not in the traditional sense. Unfortunately, characters of that age do not fit into the plot of Behind the Shawl, so we cannot have anyone playing a character who is underage. If your character does have a child who is under the age of eighteen, perhaps they can show up in a post, but you cannot play them on their own.
On that note, you cannot play them as your main character, either.
Q: How much should I write for strengths/weaknesses and likes/dislikes/fears?
A: More than anything, we just want to see that you have a well-rounded character with strengths and weaknesses. If something is clearly articulated elsewhere, you don't need to explain it again here.
For likes, dislikes and fears, please don't simply list out nouns. We don't particularly care that your character likes, dislikes or fears pizza, radios, or pop music. What we do care about is why. How is pizza a vital part of your character's life or personality? You don't need to explain everything, but some explanations are helpful. We're not interested in many more than five or six.
Strengths and weaknesses should be explained if they are not obvious. Personality flaws or what they aren't good at for their job are equally valid.
Q: What if I wanted to start a little plot aside from main plot(s) going on in the Shawl?
A: The reason that we haven't implemented such a form (because you know we love forms!) is because we feel that it would limit the organic creation of plots. I would rather see interaction between characters develop into a plot spontaneously than have the two players plan out in detail what will happen. We want to see plots develop from characters, not any desire for drama.
That said, we have had several players PM us or ping us via AIM or MSN to discuss plot ideas they had. If you have an idea to add to the main plot, we would love to hear about it, but short of breaking rule six, we don't want you to limit yourselves in terms of plots because you feel the need to run them past us. You can always ask someone if you want to know what is going on with his characters; after all, who knows better?
